The Chirping Bird resort is located on a foothill & gets a high view of tree laden hill across, which has Sattal lake on the other side. Client’s brief was to keep solar water heater mounted on roof hidden from ground level. For this, we reversed the slope of normal gable roof & butterfly roof was proposed. In addition to hiding solar water heaters mounted on roof, it gave an added advantage of framing high views in tall windows. The result was also symbolic of the project title, i.e, The Chirping Bird. Only fixed glazing was planned in tall windows, openable windows were kept in veranda.
The 3214 sqm plot had a natural depression towards the middle. This natural depression was retained & utilized to collect rainwater thereby creating a small pond. Building blocks were organized around it with orientation to capture views of tree laden hill & maximize south winter sun. Owners’ cottages were placed close to the pond along one edge of property while visitors’ rooms along another. Common areas like reception, dining & recreation were located in between the two in a corner with the roof utilized for parking. Local wood with oiling & stone were largely used for elevation.
