Octagon house is based on the octagon as a module, which is a square with chamfered corners resulting in four wide faces & four narrow ones. The module was suggested by client. This basic module has been used to define various spaces & create an undulating facade. Bedrooms placed in the corner have windows on every face for panoramic view. The living room & dining placed in the middle look into generous triangular verandas on either side created in between. Verandas private to bedrooms provide for outdoor living. First floor verandas are protected by wire mesh for peaceful evenings.
House is entered through a double height hexagonal lobby that also has a wooden staircase leading directly to first floor. Rooms are accessed through the chamfered corners that create an interesting sense of orientation. A vestibule acting as a transition space separates living & bedroom. First floor high vestibule brings in lot of light through clerestory windows. Both living & dining rooms have fireplace directly opposite entry acting as a centre of interest.
A lot of wood has been used in the house both in the floor & ceiling for a sense of warmth. Ground & first floor spaces have a different character with first floor having sloping roof while the intermediate floor is solid wood resting on girders. Furniture & furnishing, fixtures & finishing, details like fireplace & fascia along gutter were selected directly by client.
